I'm going to guess the BA flight was from a remote stand, with the passengers bussed to the aircraft. So all the information at the gate was correct but the bus took them to the wrong plane.

I've seen similar things twice with bus-boarding of KLM Cityhopper flights at Schiphol. Once we we had to wait on the bus while a load of passengers destined for Geneva got back off our plane (going to Sweden).

Interesting story, and so easy to imagine happening. As a student pilot, flying out of BED, I was entering that class D airspace, on the radio with the tower, and cleared to land. It was winter, and the ground was covered with snow, and I thought I was lined up with the runway when the tower called and asked where was I… I then realized I was lined for a landing…on a nearby frozen snow covered lake, literally within about 500 AGL.
Surprisingly easy to mistake what you see when your brain is settled with a conclusion you’ve already reached.
