Not a politician story, but I was at the 1992 Democratic convention in NYC, a guest of a friend who was a delegate. I saw some bright lights coming toward me in a hallway, and as it got closer I could see it was a scrum of reporters and a big camera as they walked and talked with Dick Cavett. He had on a ton of pancake makeup and I was just kind of absently staring at it not so much because it was him but just that the makeup was so intense…I guess I was really staring because as he got closer to me he kind of yelled “HELLO!” as if I’d been trying to get him to notice me, which I wasn’t. Shocked, I just said “ER…Hi Dick…Sorry…” as he passed me. Still embarrassed about it.

Have had only one close encounter. Back in the early 90s, I was majoring in Political Science at FAU. I was speed walking to class at the same time as Mike Dukakis was speed walking to teach his class in the opposite direction. We rounded the corner and collided with each other. We were both laughing as we picked up and sorted out our papers. I hope your curse against Democrats retires today.

I guess my track record is decidedly mixed:
–Saw Bill Clinton at the 2000 DNC, met him sometime around 2008 or so in my office building’s lobby in New York, and a couple years later walked past Bill *and* Hillary at the corner of 57th and 7th, where they were huddled under an umbrella in front of two Secret Service guys.
–Saw George H.W. and Barbara Bush at the 2004 RNC.
–Pete Buttigieg visited my office when he was running, and his entourage passed me in the hallway. Good cologne.
–I shot stills of Obama’s 2009 inauguration, so I was up on the riser on one side of the platform, where I basically saw the entire current and former governments: the Clintons, the Bushes, the Gores, the Quayles, the Mondales, McCain, Specter, Ted Kennedy, Jesse Jackson Jr, SCOTUS, the Bidens, the Cheneys, AND Yo-yo Ma and Aretha Franklin.
–when I checked in to my DC hotel a couple days before, the doorman nudged me and excitedly pointed out that David Gergen was staying in the same hotel.
–GWBush’s Treasury Secretary John Snow poked his head into my office and asked a bunch of questions about what I was working on.
–I found myself at the same Christmas Eve church service in NYC as the embattled NJ governor Jim McGreevey, not long before he resigned. (Same church where they had Walter Cronkite’s funeral, which Obama attended, but I didn’t.)
–in the summer of 2016, I was on the AA shuttle from DCA to LGA and got upgraded to F…one row behind Eric Trump. He played Tetris the whole time.
