Just noticed this article is from 2016, yet here we are, nothing has gotten any better of course. I flew a lot 20 years ago, then hardly flew for work, now I'm back to burning up the skies again. I had no idea how low the level of passengers and behavior had sunk recently. I don't look down on people like a snob and am more than happy to speak to people who appear to not have nearly as much as I do, I used to not have much myself. But...passengers, who used to be mostly business class travelers, have morphed into almost a complete cross section of today's society. There are all kinds onboard now, and many that don't know or care how to act. They sloppy, rude and many don't know how to fly. They can't find the correct seat, they can't find the correct seat belt, they can't stow their bag(s) quickly and get out of the aisle. You name it, it's a real horror show boarding and flying now. Not much fun anymore.

Why would a pilot or airline company when receiving a threat of a bomb on board turn around to the airport it left, flying another five hours, instead of landing at the nearest airport and then investigating? If there’s really a possibility of a bomb, why take the chance of flying 5 more hours?

Patrick, I love you… but I do not think the problems we see on airlines are a result of allowing all of us plebeians (commoners) to fly. The answer is in your question - what happened to reasonable protocols of civility, manners and courtesy? In my opinion, the further we have moved from moral truth, intact families, and the Ten Commandments, the faster society has flushed itself down the toilet, with all of its aberrant and selfish behavior. What we see on the airlines simply mirrors what we see on the ground - sadly.

I flew with Singapore Airlines from New Zealand to Europe return via Singapore earlier this year, the fourth such trip but only the second time with SAL. I specifically chose to fly with them due to their professionalism - they beat Emirates by a long shot. Every time I disembark a long-haul plane I am astounded at the state of the aircraft - I cannot believe just how messy other people are and how disgusting they leave their seats and the floor, even those in the pointy end of the plane whom, for some naive reason, I would have expected to be tidier. I mistakenly expected other passengers to leave their spaces as clean as tidy as I do my own. There is no excuse for it as the attendants regularly walk the plane throughout each flight with rubbish bags to relieve you of your litter. On the last return flight I even quietly remarked to one of the attendants when disembarking that I was shocked at how messy the plane was and, surprised at my comment, she gave an embarrassed giggle. They are obviously used to it but I am totally ashamed that people can be such slobs.

I think part of this is triggered by the contempt so many airlines - especially US carriers - have for their passengers.
They seem to hate or at least barely tolerate them and many are just returning the favor by responding in kind.

the best flight I have had in decades was Philippine airlines. The planes were roomy with way more legroom than Delta ever thought about, the lavs were clean and well equipped with lotions, soap and scents. The food was terrific served by friendly and courteous flight attendants who made frequent trash runs and kept our water and other glasses full. When I asked for something instead of some surely remark they attendants acted as though they really wanted to provide it. It was a nice change. I haven't seen such pleasantry in a US based carrier in many decades.

I don't recall seeing anything like the mess I have witnessed on Delta and God help you if you fly American Airlines, that was like a flying prison sentence. Never again!

Culture, such as it is, has become incredibly course and aggressive. It's reflected in our entertainment, in addition to boorish public behavior. I'm totally bewildered by the slob-look of many air passengers. I don't expect a tie and waistcoat, but really, am I the only person who can afford to buy a Brooks Brothers dress shirt? And sensible shoes?

Regarding on how rare it used to be for the average person to fly,
when I was in high school in the mid-nineties one of my teachers
told the class about the time he flew on an airplane when he was also a teenager himself, which would have been around 1960. He said it probably was very unusual for most adolescents back then to fly, unlike today.
