I’ve followed your missives for more than a decade, and never tire of your photographs as you have an eye for composition and fine detail that I appreciate. Your photographs of the Seine bridges are good example of that skill.

I also enjoy your notes and photos of West Africa whenever they appear. Having lived in Somalia and Kenya in the 1980s, my work took me through most of west Africa. So the memories they conjure are a treat.

In reply to Berangere de Saint Leger. At the Musée des Arts et métiers you will find the first prototype made for the New York statue of Liberty. The one at l'isle aux cygnes is a replica gift from the Americans living in Paris at the time. [can't find who made that one?].

After thorough research and exhaustive analysis of empirical evidence, I concur with my colleague Speed. Most bridges are indeed heavier than most airplanes. Furthermore, to wit, I’ll never be invited to The Academy Awards. If they stopped me on the red carpet and asked me “Who are you wearing?” I’d reply “Fruit of the Loom!”

To return to aviation, both airplanes and bridges are characterized by their spans although bridge designers aren’t as concerned about weight as the engineers at Boeing and Airbus are.

Great story Patrick! I love Paris and have been fortunate over the past ten years or so to have had 2-4 business trips a year to the City of Light! Walking is my favorite activity there – we’ll, on second thought maybe eating is my favorite activity there. Last July my wife and I went for a morning run from our hotel which is halfway between Trocadero and Place Victor Hugo and we ended up on the Île aux Cygnes and crossed back to the Right Bank on the Pont de Passy so I immediately recognized your photo. My favorite is the Pont Alexandre Ii but I have to say that I’ve never looked underneath. Another favorite is the Bridge of Locks which I think is actually called the Pont des Arts crossing from the Louvre to the Latin Quarter.

When I saw the headline about Paris bridges the Léopold Sédar-Senghor footbridge immediately came to mind. You shot it from it’s most beautiful angle, I have an almost identical photo at home taken in 2013. I love the woodwork of the steps and handrails!
