As a former single mother, I agree: in Business Class you’re paying for a certain experience, not disruptions from unmanaged children. The real entitlement often comes from parents who don’t—or won’t—set boundaries. Parents model behavior, and public manners seem to be slipping, whether it’s noisy kids or people blasting audio in shared spaces.

On one 7-hour BA Business flight, a young couple’s baby and toddler cried most of the way. They apologized, but it still affected the whole cabin. I managed to sleep with industrial earplugs and headphones, but many others couldn’t rest.

Of course, babies cry and toddlers are hard—but consistent parenting does make a difference. It’s not easy, but it raises respectful, considerate adults. Interestingly, I’ve often seen better child behavior in Economy than in Business, which suggests this may be partly an entitlement issue.

I was a single mother and I totally agree with you. The main problem is that many parents these days don't bother to discipline their children in public. Goes along with people playing music and videos loudly in public. Manners and consideration have gone the way of the stagecoach. I once had a 7 hour BA flight with a young couple next to me with a baby and toddler that they simply couldn't keep

I understand the concerns about noise and disruption, but banning kids from first and business class seems too extreme. Traveling with family can be challenging, and these flights provide an opportunity for parents to have a more comfortable experience. Perhaps there could be designated family sections instead of an outright ban?

Totally valid complaint. It seems criminal to charge people full price for business class long haul flights and to have the experience ruined by people with screaming infants. I don’t understand how you can go through most everyday modes of travel without running into babies but they seem to come out of the woodwork on every single long flight.

Great Piece.
I'm a Worldwide Traveller from the UK.
Business (& certainly, never First) is not a place for Infants or Young Children.
Passengers purchase a service that provides comfort. That comfort is removed.
Replies about 'Entitlement' are actually THE Entitled being blinkered when it comes to any grasp of Etiquette.
The examples you provided are so typical of these classless, human beings whose Etiquette
Standards are so lacking, be it any social setting.
Economy is the place for discomfort. Even so, in Economy, there is still no excuse for loose parenting, such as offspring's unsupervised, rowdy behaviour within the airport, and it's never acceptable for children to be climbing on, kicking or pounding airplane seats!
