Only just saw this, three weeks after you posted it.
Every evening I'm out walking da dawg & see the Emirates flight leaving for Dubai. That airport has been hit several times (at least). One fine day it's going to be a plane full of people that gets hit, either in the air or on the ground.
Then everybody will ask "What were they THINKING?"

I don’t care if the ME3 serve porterhouse steaks with the finest wines on the flights, they will never (and I do mean never) see me as a passenger. Far as I’m concerned, that entire area of the world should be walled off. I’ve worked in the Middle East and each time I was there, I felt I should be looking over my shoulder. I intensely distrust anyone and anything to do with the Arab world.

Patrick, you need a drone to get a picture of those A380s and 777s.

As far as subsidies, think of the skilled workforce Emirates requires. Even the skilled workforce to build, maintain, and run the airport and infrastructure.

Schiphol also has a huge departures board. And they manage to do business without sharia, enslaving women, or harboring terrorists.
I never understood why Westerners were so enamored by places like Dubai. Sure, they can buy a lot with their oil money. But they're not buying me.
I'll gladly fly with others and through other places. Plenty of great Asian carriers. And a few EU ones still too. The last thing I'll do is add to their demise by funneling even more money to the corrupt sheiks behind ME3.

No doubt about it, DXB is really a crossroads of the world. I could stand for hours looking at the departures board at that airport and marvel at both the variety and quantity of flights to points around the globe. For me, however, nothing will compare to the Pan Am departures board at the Worldport at New York-JFK Airport. As a kid in the early 1970s, to see the list of departing flights to Europe, South America, Africa, Asia...and yes, even to Australia (with multiple stops along the way, mind you) was nothing short of a miracle. It was exoticism on steroids. Adding to the experience...seeing those gorgeous 747s, 747SPs and 707s at the gates...all being boarded by a class of travelers for whom the journey was almost as exciting as the destination. Sadly, this does not really exist today. I am already pumped for my next trip...JFK-MUC-HND (eastbound to Japan, the loooong way around); the return HND-FRA just might go eastbound too; then backtracking westbound FRA-JFK! I do believe I am the only person who thinks this is exciting.
